Pre-employment control and selection

I often wonder if the pre-employment tests and background checks are legal. The short answer is yes. Companies can test applicants for employment. The answer is more than the tests must be non-discriminatory and testing must be properly managed.

Employers often use tests and other selection procedures to screen candidates for the arrivals. The types of tests and selection procedures used include cognitive tests, personality tests, medical examinations, credit checks and background checks.

Companies can legally use these tests, provided they do not use them to discriminate based on race, colour, sex, national origin, religion, disability or age (40 years or more). Employment tests must be validated for the jobs they are used for arrivals and the purposes for which they are used.

Online pre-employment tests

Depending on the type of test, employment testing can be made online or employer. The online tests are often used for pre-employment testing and evaluation. Using online testing eliminates the need for candidate countries to visit in the company or office for the company having to administer the test.

Types of employment tests

Tests cognitive
Cognitive tests measure a candidate's reasoning, memory, perception of speed and precision, and numeracy skills and reading comprehension, and a knowledge of a function or a job.

The physical aptitude tests
Capacity physical tests measure the physical ability of an applicant to perform a specific task or the strength of certain groups of muscles, and strength and endurance in general.

Examples of tasks
Examples of tasks, including performance tests, simulations, examples of work, employment and realistic insights, a candidate to assess the performance and ability to perform specific tasks.

Medical tests
Enquiries medical and medical examinations, including psychological tests to assess the physical or mental health.

The personality tests
Personality tests, we assess the extent to which a person has certain characteristics or provisions or predict the likelihood that a person engaging in certain behaviors.

Background and credit checks
Criminal background checks provide information on the arrest and conviction history. From solvency, provide you with information on credit and financial history.

English proficiency testing
English tests to determine if the candidate is fluent in English.

Lie detector tests
Employees Polygraph Protection Act (EPPA) prohibits most private sector employers to use lie detector tests, either for pre-employment screening or during employment.
